Frequently Asked Questions
Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity at the University of Washington is welcoming to all genders!
We embrace the concept of "Brotherhood." Brotherhood is fostered by sharing common goals and common experiences. We strive to engage in events that strengthen our Brotherhood bonds. We view each person as an integral part of the extended Phi Sigma Pi family (the key word being family). Phi Sigma Pi becomes a second home for students, a home comprised of a group of people that respect, trust, value and appreciate each other. Our Brothers not only enjoy working alongside each other during official Phi Sigma Pi events, but they genuinely desire to be with each other outside of officially sponsored Phi Sigma Pi events as well. Brotherhood becomes a bond that lasts long after graduation. Societies typically do not cultivate this type of relationship with their members. If you are interested in joining us, participate in the next rush period to become a prospective Brother.

Your first quarter with Phi Sigma Pi will be the most financially demanding due to induction fees, paying for pins, etc. This generally runs about $168.00. After that, you can plan to pay $85.00 a quarter. $48.00 of this money goes to Nationals to keep Phi Sigma Pi running as well as put on events for the entire fraternity-like National Convention! The rest of your quarterly dues ($37.00) funds our local chapter. We use this money to put on events. We have done canoeing on Lake Washington, attending an escape room, going to a corn maze, and more in the past. We would love your input for new and exciting events to do in the future!
Absolutely! We encourage our members to take part in other organizations around campus! We have members that are busy in the UW Panhellenic, Interfraternal, and Cultural Greek Communities that are still able to be active members of Phi Sigma Pi.
"Rush" is used to describe the recruitment process for students who are interested in becoming members--prospective Brothers--to meet current Zeta Sigma Brothers. These events are usually scheduled during the first week of a recruitment quarter, and includes information sessions and other fun events that potential members can participate in to learn about us Brothers and the fraternity as a whole. Please attend these events during a recruitment quarter to decide if Phi Sigma Pi is the right organization for you.
Visit our "Recruitment" page on this website to learn more about current and future recruitment events.
If you are offered a bid (an endorsement from one of the Brothers) after the recruitment process and choose to accept it, you will then take part in the Initiation Program. Initiation is a 7-week period where you, as an Initiate, will have the opportunity to explore what it means to become a "Brother for life." Initiation is a learning period as well a chance for the Initiates (and Brothers) to assess whether or not Phi Sigma Pi is a suitible match for them.
During the Initiation period, Initiates will learn about the history of the fraternity and the chapter, the fraternity's purpose, and the fraternity ideals in the form of a tripod; and develop the necessary leadership skills to become a successful member of Phi Sigma Pi. To help you in your journey to become a member of the fraternity, a "Big" Brother will be assigned to you to be your mentor, guide, and friend as you grow personally and professionally during the member education program and beyond.
Absolutely not.
Phi Sigma Pi has a strict zero-tolerance policy on hazing. Every Brother and Initiate signs an agreement every quarter adhereing to our anti-hazing risk management policies. Any Initiate who are uncomfortable with what is asked of them during initiation should voice their concerns and report the issue to a Chapter Officer.
